First of all, be sure to plant certified seed potatoes and to rotate your potatoes on at least a three, but better yet a five year, schedule. This is a fungal infection and thrives where the pH is alkaline and the soil is on the overly dry side. Try to keep the pH near or below 6.0 and make sure the potatoes receive adequate water. Also, clean up and remove any infected plants and potatoes in the fall clean up to try to reduce the reinfection rate. Finally, plant resistant varieties.
