English ivy clings by using little hairy holdfasts that stick to the supporting wall. These are very strong and remain attached to the wall even when the ivy is pulled off of it. Since stucco is a surface layer only, rather than an integral part of the wall, there is a chance that the ivy could damage it by virtue of its weight or if ever it needed to be removed.
