You can plant container grown mums in the ground very easily. Prepare the soil with ample organic matter and ensure it is a location with very good drainage so that the plant will not have "wet feet" in the winter time. The plant also needs full sun. A small plant set out in the spring will grow very large over the summer; fall planted mums are best planted as early in the fall as possible so they have more time to become established before winter sets in. Keep in mind, however, if your mum is sold as a "florist mum" there is a chance it may not be winter hardy.
