I planted a honeylocust tree last year. It is starting to sprout up the trunk. Is there a special way to prune the tree? |
It sounds as though your sapling is trying to become a shrub! Rub out the buds along the trunk up to the point where you want branches to develop. If the buds have already begun to form shoots, prune them off close to the trunk (without damaging the bark on the trunk). Once you remove these extra sprouts the tree will concentrate its energy into developing the existing branches and growing in height. You'll need to rub out buds along the trunk for a few years until the tree stops producing them. |
