I am getting ready to prune my dieffenbachia back so that the stalk will be about 8 inches. Should this be a blunt cut or a slanted cut?

Either type cut will be okay with your indoor plant. The reason for cutting on a slant is to keep rainwater from collecting on the stub. Indoor plants don't have to contend with rainwater and therefore don't need the extra protection of a slanted cut.
