It is true that too much copper in the soil is toxic to plants. However, copper is being used in the interior lining of a new type of commerical nursery container to prevent root growth and the problem of encircling roots within the container, so using the old copper boilers should not hurt your plants. You might want to protect the boilers however by coating the inside with a sealer that could later be removed if anyone ever wanted to.
