Gardenias love a soil mix high in organic matter content and an acidic pH (about 5.5-6.0). Fertilize periodically (monthly to every 6 weeks) with an acidic fertilizer such as azalea/camelea food or a liquid fertilizer like Miracid. Cottonseed meal is another option. Keep evenly watered. Water slowly and deeply to moisten the entire root ball. Don't "sprinkle." Give it a part sun location. In our low desert with its extreme sunshine, half day morning sun is best, especially for a container plant. Note that gardenias are kind of marginal here in the low desert, even though they are sold in the nurseries. Good luck!
