Barberry Shrub Drops Its Leaves Early Summer - Knowledgebase Question

My barberry shrub produces leaves every spring and then they drop completely off by early summer. Can you
enlighten me as to what is the cause and the cure for this?

Unfortunately, based on your description, I am unable to specifically diagnose the problem with your barberry. This is normally a trouble free plant! However, it is possible that it is infected with a fungus or disease such as verticillium wilt which can cause leaf drop much as you described. Since the normal recommendation for verticillium would be to remove the infected plant and the soil around it, you might wish to consult with your county extension (272-7241) for a more exact diagnosis and suggested remedies, if any.
