Would peat moss be good to use when planting potatoes? |
All vegetables prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter and that is well-drained. Peat moss adds organic matter to the soil. It also can temporarily and slightly reduce pH, which can prevent a fungal disease of potatoes called scab. However, peat moss is usually more expensive than other forms of organic matter, such as compost, so unless you have unlimited resources, I'd suggest using compost to achieve similar results, unless scab is a recurring problem in your potato patch. Another drawback that I find with peat moss is that once it dries out, it's difficult to remoisten. Hope this info helps! |
