|Red Berginia was planted in a garden I take care of and I don't know the proper care for the plant. Some of the plants did flower in the spring. I want to know when and if I should cut down (in the fall) or leave until after spring when they flower? Or just do nothing with the plant?
|Bergenia is known for its early blooming and colorful "evergreen" foliage, but in some years the foliage really takes a beating during the winter. Trim away any badly damaged leaves in the spring and apply a bit of compost or complete fertilizer, then keep it well watered and mulched for the summer. Remove the spent flowers and stems, and keep an eye out for slug problems. It's a relatively low maintenance plant.|
