Petunias require at least a half day of sunshine (preferable including noon) to flower well. They need a rich soil well amended with organic matter such as compost or rotted leaves or aged stable manure and bedding, along with even moisture (but not soggy soil) to do their best. Most annuals need this type of soil to bloom their best all season. For shade, you might consider impatiens, bedding begonias, coleus and caladiums.
