What do you do with the winter hardy pansies when they get tall and fall over? Do you cut them down or back?

In some cases the pansies simply will not tolerate the summer heat and look so terrible it is preferable to take them out and replace them. During a particularly hot summer even the most heat tolerant types may out and out die, but some gardeners will try to keep them. To do so, trim them back quite hard and allow them to recover slowly over the summer and come into bloom again in the fall. Make sure they receive ample water and nutrients, and if they are in a container, move it to a cool, semi-shady location. Which course you take is a matter of personal preference.
