I have recently installed a drip irragation system for my trees and shrubs. Is there a rule of thumb as to how much water a tree/shrub should get during the hot summer months (80-90 F and <40% humidity)?

The usual rule of thumb is an inch of water a week, whether from irrigation or rainfall. You can figure this out by turning on your system for half an hour and then digging a hole to see if the water has reached down six inches. If not, then turn it on again. As soon as the water reaches six inches, the plants have received an inch. Good luck!
