I AM NOTICING SEVERAL OF MY ROSES HAVE CANESS TURNING BROWN ON ONE SIDE ONLY. REGULAR DYBACK IS VERTICAL,FROM TOP TO BOTTOM OR BOTTOM UP, BUT THIS IS THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE OF ENTIRE CANES. WHEN CUT, THE INSIDE IS BROWN ON ONE HALF ONLY. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS DAMAGE??? |
A one-sided purpling or darkening of the stems such as you describe is sometimes a sign of verticillium in roses. Since this is potentially such as serious problem, I would strongly suggest you consult with your county extension (727-7850) (you may need a plant pathologist to check it) and/or a consulting rosarian for a definite diagnosis. |
