|I have planted zucchini in very large pots that I started indoors - when the blooms come on, they open but after they have been open and closed for a few days, they will fall off. I have only put one plant per pot and they get alot of sun and I keep them watered. I have even put Miracle Grow on them. Why do the blooms keep falling off ? At this rate I will not get any zucchini.|
|Zucchini is such a prolific producer, I wouldn't worry about losing some of the early season blooms. The first blossoms to open are usually male, and they won't produce fruit. Male blossoms are attached to a straight stem. Female blossoms have a slight swelling behind the petals where the stem meets the bloom. These are the blossoms with the potential to produce fruit. If the blossoms are falling off, they might be males, or they may be female flowers that were not pollinated. Make sure there's some insect activity around your plants and don't wet the flowers when you water the plants. If you don't see insects visiting the female flowers, you can always remove a male bloom and touch the inside parts of the female flowers with the inside parts of the male flower to transfer pollen.
Hope you have a bountiful harvest of zucchini!
