I planted pole lima beans about three weeks ago. I see very little action where I planted them, I do see a couple of very thin stem in this area do lima beans send up a small thin stem first before the main bean stalk appears? Also how much sun is needed for them to grow?

Limas need full sun to grow well. They also need warm soil to germinate and grow quickly and do best in hot sunny weather. Normally they will germinate within about a week and start growing upward rapidly. There should be leaves unfurling at the tip of the stem, too. It sounds like something may have eaten the leaves. You might want to replant.
