Based on your description, it is difficult to identify the pest and without knowing the pest it is impossible to make a detailed suggestion as to how to deal with it. However, I would suspect that it is slug damage. Slugs work at night and may leave slime trails on or near the plants. If you think it is slugs, try sprinkling diatomaceous earth (horticulture grade) on the soil around the plants, or try hand picking them at night by flashlight. Slugs can also be caught in beer-baited traps or killed with slug bait. If you use this, be very careful to read and follow the label instructions.
