|I am moving into a house July 1, so I will be starting my garden late. What types of vegetables and herbs will I still be able to plant for this year?
I would like to try: cucumbers, radishes, tomatos, canteloupe, yellow or orange peppers, and basil.
Please let me know any ideas, even if the aforementioned cannot be planted this late. Thanks
|Peppers and tomatoes take a long time to grow and bear, so they may not be possible this year unless you grow them in containers and take them with you when you move. The cucumbers and canteloupe can be planted from seed and you should certainly have good success with the cukes. Some melons need a long season to mature, so make sure you select a quick maturing variety, perhaps with smaller melons. The basil should do well for you as it needs warm weather to germinate and grow. It also grows quickly. Perennial herbs such as thyme, sage, and chives can also be planted during the summer. You might consider adding bush beans to your list. The radishes will not do well at all in hot weather, but you could try planting them as a fall crop. Other summer planted fall crops would include greens and peas as well as members of the cabbage family.|
