How far from a hedge is it safe to plant a perennial garden?

Ideally, you would leave ample room for the hedge roots as well as to leave access for maintaining the hedge -- a ladder and room to maneuver the clippers or trimmer plus weeding those inevitable tree seedlings that grow at the base. A rule of thumb for an eight foot hedge would be an eight foot gap between the hedge and the garden, or, a distance equal to the height of the hedge.
