I have had a flowering dogwood tree for 3-4 years and it has done well until this year. The leaves look wilty and have brown spots and now the bark is cracked/split.

Dogwoods can be affected by a number of serious pests and diseases, and based on your desctiption it is difficult to make a guess as to which one this is suffering. Bark injury however is usually a sign of a very serious problem, either borer damage or possibly mechanical damage that has interfered with the tree's ability to take up moisture and nutrients. You might wish to consult with a professionally trained, certified arborist or with your County Extension (699-2377) for a more specific diagnosis and suggested remedies, if any.
