I am growing cantelopes for the first time and the plants are all taking off quite nicely. How do I get large size cantelopes? I have lots of flowers and many small cantelopes starting to develop. Will all of these tiney cantelopes develop into large size fruits? It is now July 17. How long will it take until the cantelopes become full size? |
The length of time to maturity depends greatly on the variety you are growing. A minimum would be about two months from transplanting, but many take closer to 90 days or so. In general, once the vine sets about six fruit, you would remove any additional melons. Make sure the soil is kept evenly moist (a mulch can help with this) and fertilize lightly every couple of weeks. An occasional top dressing of compost and application of compost tea can also help because melons need very high fertility. Ultimately the size of the melons will depend on how well you prepared your soil in the first place, how well you care for them, plus what kind of season we have combined with the variety you grew. |
