|I'm growing a bell pepper plant in a container on my deck and twice now when the peppers are about the size of golf balls, something is ripping them off the plant and throwing them on the ground. We do have chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits and raccoons around us so I'm sure it's one of them (probably raccoons). What can I do to prevent this? Right now, I am covering the plant with a plastic bag at night to try to deter them but I'm afraid this will suffocate the plant. Any suggestions?
|Rather than a plastic bag, you might try forming a cage of wire mesh to protect the plant since this will allow for better air exchange and circulation. Remember to allow room for growth when you build it. You could also try a repellent (either a commercial spray or a homemade one using garlic and/or red pepper as a base) but in my experience fencing is usually more reliable over the long term.
