Water ponds: My water hyacinths are slowly turning brown from the center out. They have been in the new pond for about four weeks. The pond was treated with a pond prep powder before the plants and fish were introduced. The rest of the plants and fish are fine. The water temp is in the 70's to 80's currently. |
Water hyacinths tend to need a very fertile environment along with full sun and warm water to do their best. Often, a new pond is too "clean" to supply enough nutrients for this plant. You might try planting the roots in a pot of ordinary garden soil (and elevating the pot to keep them at the surface) and possibly add a lily tab and see if that helps. Growing them in a container also makes it easier to bring one inside to overwinter if that is something you want to try to do. |
