|The tropical hibiscus can be pruned back hard all at once in early spring as it begins to put on a growth spurt, or it can be pruned selectively year round. It blooms on older wood so removing a branch at a time over a longer period causes less disruption to the blooming cycle. Keep in mind that the plants are actually large and gangly shrubs by nature, so it will become more and more difficult to control their size over time. This is especially true if the plant was originally treated with growth retardants and has finally outgrown the treatment.
