I have always had good luck growing broccoli plants from my local nursery, but last year's crop, though sweet, had very tough stems. I would like to order seeds this year, as finding broccoli plants here is difficult, and there's no choice of variety. Which variety would you recommend for the low deserts of Arizona? I am leaning towards the 'Love Me Tender' variety.

Just about any broccoli will do well here in our extended cool season. (Did you know Arizona is a leading producer of broccoli for the country?) I think 'Love Me Tender' will be a good choice as the heads are a little bit smaller than some other varieties, which seems to translate into a more tender vegetable. Keep soil consistently moist with regular irrigation and a layer of mulch. That should help with tenderness, as well.
