Container-grown plants can be planted any time the ground is not frozen, but early spring and early fall would be preferable. Bare-root plants are dormant and would normally only be available in the spring. That is when they should be planted so that they can come out of dormancy along with the season.

Elderberries (Sambucus) need a full to partially sunny location, and rich soil that is evenly moist and well drained (not soggy). They also need protection from deer, which like to browse on their tender branches in winter and spring.
