Is It A Black Raspberry? - Knowledgebase Question

Two years ago, I purchased what I though was a variety of black raspberry. I am not sure now it was. When the berries are picked the hull stayes in the berry. The canes are square not round like my red raspberries and the leaves have five section on it not three like the red ones. They are also thornless. I thought that raspberry fruit left their hulls on the stems. Am I right in thinking they may not raspberries?

The plant sounds like Arapaho, a thornless black raspberry, or a thornless loganberry. For a positive identification, why not take a fruiting cane to your local Master Gardener clinic or Cooperative Extension office. They'll be able to help you figure out exactly what you're growing! Contact WSU Cooperative Extension at (509) 477-2048.
