The relationship between plants and soil is complex, but basically the plant roots uptake nutrients from the soil. If the soil is lacking in something, for example, nitrogen, it will show up in the plant as a nitrogen deficiency, usually visible by older leaves turning yellow. Another factor is the soil's pH level, or its acidity or alkalinity. For example, some plants are adapted to alkaline soils and can thrive, whereas a plant that needs a more acidic soil would struggle. Hope this helps!
