|What is the best type of structure to grow grapes on? Do they do better on a fence type strucure or and overhead arbor type structure? Do they prefer any type of material of which the structure should be made? I plant to grow at least two types of grapes-concord and one other.|
|The main consideration for a support for home grown grapes is probably sturdiness. The plants are extremely heavy when covered with grapes! The support should also be a long term one because the vines are very long lived plants and it would be a shame to cause extensive root damage in order to replace a support.
A typical "working" model consists of strong post supports and wire for the vines to run along. This is utilitarian and keeps pruning and spraying and harvesting within easy reach.
A more decorative approach is to grow them on an arbor, the traditional thought being that is also a nice place to sit. This method requires one to climb on a ladder to work on the vines.
The choice is just according to personal preference.
