Seed starting is fairly straightforward, but some plants are much easier than others to grow by direct seeding them in the garden. Indoor growing allows the gardener to control and optimize the conditions so that germination rates are better. Too, many perennials have special germination requirements including in some cases pretreatment of the seeds. For these reasons, many gardeners start their annual, vegetable, and perennial seeds indoors and then set out transplants. You might try searching the article archive and Q&A for specifics on individual plants, or look at a book -- one I like is Nancy Bubel's "Seed Starter's Handbook" from Rodale Press ISBN: 0878577521. Here's to better luck this coming season!
