Hi Purchased a home 1yr ago. Could not aford to by plants so I went out and spent 200.00 in seeds. I raked the beds put the seeds down peatmosed kept the beds moist . Out of all the seeds, I got like 10 plants out of it. A friend told me I should sow the seeds . Do you have an article or can you refer a book on how to sow seed also when to start sowing seed. Thanks DOC |
Seed starting is fairly straightforward, but some plants are much easier than others to grow by direct seeding them in the garden. Indoor growing allows the gardener to control and optimize the conditions so that germination rates are better. Too, many perennials have special germination requirements including in some cases pretreatment of the seeds. For these reasons, many gardeners start their annual, vegetable, and perennial seeds indoors and then set out transplants. You might try searching the article archive and Q&A for specifics on individual plants, or look at a book -- one I like is Nancy Bubel's "Seed Starter's Handbook" from Rodale Press ISBN: 0878577521. Here's to better luck this coming season! |
