| I was just wondering, why can't tulips, crocus, hyacinth, etc. be grown from seed? Why do some of these bulbs not even produce seeds? Do any of them produce usable seeds? Are they reliable? Thank you |
| Bulbs can certainly be grown from seeds, and this is how new varieties are developed by the plant breeders. The process is slow however since many bulbs require several years to reach blooming size from seed, and in many cases one must plant very fresh seed in order for it to be viable. For these reasons, the plants are usually sold only as bulbs. You can try collecting seed from bulbs at home and planting it, but please don't be surprised if your results are less than satisfactory. |
