I'm looking for an evergreen tree to plant in front of my house in Greenwich Village. No direct sunlight, but a decent amount of reflected light. Needs to be able to live in a planter say 2-3 ft deep. A fir or spruce would be nice, but am open to other trees or, if absolutely necessary, a shrub. Any such beast exist?

Thanks for your help!

Although the dwarf Alberta spruces are often seen in planters, this probably would not be bright enough for one of those. You might try an upright yew, clipped to the conical outline you seem to be envisioning.
