When is the correct time of year to trim bushes and trees?

That varies depending on the plant. As a general rule, most plants are pruned in late winter/early spring just before new growth begins. However, flowering shrubs that flower on new wood are pruned after they bloom. If you pruned them in early spring, there would be no new growth for them to bloom on.
