Roses are divided into basically two groups: modern roses and old garden roses, which are sometimes called heritage roses. Damask is a variety of old garden rose. Others are alba, bourbon, cabbage, China, gallica, hybrid musk, hybrid perpetual, moss, noisette, portland, rugosa, scotch, species, and tea. Modern roses include hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora, and polyantha. "Roses for Dummies" by Lance Walheim is a good resource for this type of info.
