Want to plant some lillies. What works well in Concord Ca.? When should they be planted? |
Most any lily will thrive in your climate, so your choice is only limited by the amount of garden space you can devote to them. Different types of lilies bloom at different times of the year; try planting Oriental hybrids as well as species lilies so you can enjoy flowers from early spring through late summer bloom. Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are lily look-alikes and are well adapted to your gardening region. Lilies can be planted in the very early spring or in early fall. Although lilies can be grown in large containers, they do much better in the ground. They need a sunny location with good drainage. Lilies can be staked individually with the stake being put in place when the lily is first planted -- this way you won't accidently spear the bulb when you put in the stake. Tie it using a figure eight of soft material (old nylon stocking works well) with one loop around the stem and one loop around the stake. Use two or three ties per stem so the stalk is evenly supported. |
