Should you winterize strawberries in zone 7? If so how?

I've found the best way to treat strawberry plants is to remove the old leaves at the end of the season, either by pinching them off near the crown of the plant, or mowing over the entire strawberry bed. Doing so eliminates insect hiding places and disease pathogens. Be careful not to injure the crown of the plant during the process - that's where the buds are for next spring's growth. You can remove the leaves from your plants now, in anticipation of warm spring weather.
