| I would like to know what pH is best for a Brown's yew. I have lost one and another is turning brownish yellow and I would like to save it. Other shrubs in the bed (dwarf euonymus and hollies) are doing well. |
| Yew will tolerate a range of soils, although they don't like extremely alkaline or extremely acidic. If the other shrubs are doing well, the pH is probably okay. Yew can be sensitive to drying winds and cold temperatures, with needle damage the result. Yellowing needles can also be caused by salt/fertilizer buildup in the root zone, when water isn't applied slowly and deeply enough. Again, however, since your other shrubs are fine, it's difficult to determine what's happening. I suggest you take a sample of the yew to your County Cooperative Extension office for aid in diagnosing the problem. They are at 128E Water St., Plymouth, 793-2163. Good luck! |
