Is it true that slugs will stay away from an area that has been planted with artemesia? If so, how many would I need to plant to protect one hosta plant?

To be honest I have never heard that so I do not know it to be true for a fact. However, it is hard to imagine growing the two plants together because hosta is a shade lover and artemisia insists on full sun to do well.

Better methods of slug control around hosta might include hand picking (at night, drop them into soapy water), setting beer-baited traps, or using a ring of diatomaceous earth (DE, sold in the garden center) around the plant. Also, avoid watering at night and encourage slug enemies such as toads.
