I live in the NW corner of Indiana. I have never planted tomatoes or flowers from seeds before. I know by the size of the plant when it is safe to plant, but I don't know when I should START the seeds so the plants will be proper size to go in the ground by mid May. Can you help me please?

Most seed packets will give you a hint, and provide a range of time ahead of the last spring frost when seeds should be started. The length of time depends on how long the seeds take to germinate and then on how fast or large the plants seem to get, and how long they will tolerate being indoors. Many will say 8 to 10 weeks or some, 6 to 8 weeks.
