What do I need to do about planted ferns in spring after they've died back during winter?

Simply cut the ragged top growth (fronds) back to the ground at the end of winter prior to the emergence of new fronds. A mower, weedeater or hedge trimmer is a great tool to use to do this. If you wait too long the new fronds will emerge. They are brittle and easily damaged, and will be in the way of your effort to remove the old growth.
