How do I build a raised flower bed or berm? How do I keep the dirt from being washed or blown away? Thanks!

There are several ways you can do this. One is to simply heap the soil up about six inches or more and then keep the edges nearly vertical. Another is to use a prefabricated set of edging materials sold as a raised bed kit or to make your own using sturdy boards. Another method is to use cinderblocks or even the (more expensive) preformed retaining wall blocks to build up a frame. Your choice will depend on what you have available, how much you want to spend and on how "formal" the bed needs to look.

To keep the soil from blowing away, use a layer of mulch year round. Larger particles such as shredded bark or chunks of bark will not blow away.
