You can use a wide variety of annuals, herbs and even vegetables in a container. In a sunny location you might try smaller varieties of marigolds, dahlias, or zinnias. Basils and thymes as well as parsley and chives do very well in containers. A small ornamental pepper plant could do well in your container. For a shady location, you might try impatiends, coleus, or caladiums.
