Mums need a good rich garden soil that is moist yet well drained. They should be planted in full sun. Several inches of organic mulch year round will help keep down weeds and help keep the soil cool and moist. Periodically, every few weeks, pinch back the tops to encourage branching. Do this from early spring until about the middle of July. This will form bushy plants and delay blooming until fall. Depending on the variety you grow, the plant may also need staking. In late fall, trim off the old stems to about four inches. In winter, mulch around the crowns but not over top of them. In early spring, trim away the remainder of the old stems to make way for the new growth. In my experience, the plants are more vigorous if divided each year in early spring when the shoots start the grow. They can also be started from tip cuttings. Enjoy your mums!
