I live in the central San Joaquin Valley where the growing season is long, but the summer temperatures are over 100 degrees most of the time. Most of the tomatoes that I have tried to grow seem to be very suseptible to the high temperatures. Can you recommend a variety that can withstand the heat?

There are two ways of dealing with the problem you describe: one is to grow tomatoes that will ripen before your weather gets unbearably hot, and the other is to grow beefsteak type tomatoes (which flourish in California's Central Valley). Early ripening favorites include Burpee's Early Pick Hybrid, Fourth of July, and Early Girl. One tomato developed especially for intense summer heat is Burpee's Heatwave II. Reliable beefsteak tomatoes include Brandywine, Burpee's Supersteak Hybrid, and Mortgage Lifter.
