| I am planting a row of evergreens on the north side of my house to serve as a screen and windbreak. I would like to alternate Nellie R. Stevens hollies and Variegated English hollies, in other words, one Nellie R. Stevens holly, then a Variegated English holly, then a Nellie R. Steven holly, etc. My question is, how far apart should I plant them to form a "green wall"? Any advice you can give would be much appreciated? |
| Ilex X 'Nellie R. Stevens' is a Meserve hybrid, growing into large shrub, 15'-25' high with a 10'-15' spread. If you want berries, plant at lease one male ('Edward J. Stevens' is a good choice). Ilex aquifolium, or English holly, generally grows larger (30'-50' at maturity). For best growth, provide 10'-15' between your hollies. If you plan to shear your hollies, plant them on 5' centers and prune them back on an annual basis. The branches will intertwine and make a thick, dense hedge. (Shearing will reduce berry formation.)
