|Each year we plant onion sets that say they are supposed to
be globe but they turn out as a "squashed" globe instead of
round. We have used Stuttgarter, yellow globe and spanish sweet sets and still cannot get a true "round" onion.
We would like to have some that are good "keepers".
Can you suggest something.
|The most common cause of misshapen onions is poor soil. A contributing factor can be irregular watering practices. Try amending the soil with organic matter: spread about 3" of aged compost over the planting area and dig it in to a depth of 6"-8". This will help loosen the soil, making it easier for the onions to develop. Water deeply once each week so the plants have adequate moisture while they're developing bulbs. Hope you have better success with your next onion crop!|
