Red maple or Acer rubrum is a large native tree. According to Michael Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants this tree averages 40 to 60 feet but can reach over 100 feet in height. This is a a medium grower, so one might expect it to grow about two feet a year, maybe more when it is very young. It prefers a slightly acid and moist soil but is very tolerant of different growing conditions. The root system is extensive and can disrupt lawn growth and infiltrate pipes. This tree is also prone to winter sun scald damage to the tender new bark so it is a good idea to protect the trunk with a wrapping for the first few winters. Enjoy your tree!
