| RECENTLY CHOPPED DOWN A 30FOOT PINE TREE NEXT TO MY HOUSE, THE TREE WAS GETTING TO BIG AND WAS AFRAID OF POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO MY HOME.I WOULD LIKE TO PLANT A NEW TREE, MY PROBLEM IS WHICH ONE?? MY WIFE AND I LIKE TO HAVE A TREE THAT FLOWERS IN SPRING THROUGH SUMMER. THE AREA WHERE THE TREE WILL GO IS MY PROBLEM. THE TREE WOULD BE PLANTED5-6FT FROM MY HOME IT WILL BE THE FOCAL POINT WHEN SOMEONE ENTERS THE HOUSE AND WE WOULD LIKE TO PUT OTHER PLANTS AROUND IT PERRENIALS AND ANNUALS. | The selection of a tree is based on several things. First is how much space there is, in your case a small tree will be needed to avoid rubbing against the house. Next you would need to consider the type of soil you have, whether it is extra dry or extra moist in that spot. Finally, you need to consider how much light the plant will receive, for instance hot afternoon sun or shade all day. Since a pine grew there I will assume it is in a sunny location and neither very wet nor very dry. You might look at some of the newer varieties of crabapple, checking for both mature size and good disease resistance. There are some smaller weeping forms that would fit in that space and bloom beautifully as well as making a nice focal point for additional plantings. A smaller variety of flowering ornamental cherry might also do well there. A Japanese maple could also provide an attractive centerpiece for more plantings. Again, check the mature size of the varieties you are considering. I hope this gives you some ideas. |
