Squirrels can be a real pest. You might try some of the commercial repellents, a motion activated spray of water, or consider caging off your plants.

Most vegetables really prefer sun all day long, but in late afternoon sun you might have luck with lettuce, spinach, chard, peas, and shade tolerant herbs such as parsley, mint, chives, and basil. If the sun is more toward noon and lasts for four hours, you might have luck with bush beans and cherry tomatoes as well as the above plants.

Shade is always a challenge, so you will need to experiment and see what does best for you.
