The Willow oak in my front yard has not grown in five years. Last year I fed the tree, but still no growth. The leaves appear in spring and they have not grown or increased. I am thinking of removing the tree, but I thought I would consult the experts. |
This is a slow but steady grower, so it is unusual to see no growth. It is possible that it is experiencing a problem underground in the root system whereby it is dwarfing itself. This can happen if the tree is not planted correctly, and as a result the roots have wound around themselves inside the original planting hole rather than spreading outward into the surrounding native soil. Before replacing the tree, you might want to consult with a professionally trained and certified arborist as to any other possible reasons why this has happened (such as a soil or drainage problem or disease or other cause) so that it can either be remedied or a replacement does not suffer the same fate. |
